The thirty-first skull!
Skull 31

I started this one out based on a sketch of mine that was two conjoined skulls (I just thought it looked neat), but since I was painting in a blood-red, it evolved into a bleeding “heart” of sorts. It’s a little gory, perhaps, but I love the result. I also like that I kept this one a little “sketchy” even though I have an urge to clean even more parts up and make some lines finer or more detailed. And perhaps I would have liked the result of that, too, but this is one I actually liked throughout most of the process because of the sketchy quality, so I didn’t want to completely “clean it up” … though the obsessive-compulsive part of my brain still wants to 😉
I’ve probably said it before, but I have trouble working with reds and oranges and getting them to look the way I like, particularly because I can’t use my usual route of blending in white wherever I feel like it (because… pink!). Especially when I want a deep red but I want it to stand out. I think utilizing “white space” in this one worked pretty well, and I was surprised that I didn’t feel the need to use any orange-y reds to brighten up any areas because I did my best to keep enough of that white space. I think I could do a little better with using white space rather than white paint now that I’ve tried this out – there are some areas in this painting that I know I could do it better next time, so I’m glad I worked this out on canvas instead of just with pencil/paper or in my head.
