March 2020 Newsletter

March Newsletter
Hello everyone!  The monthly newsletter is here!  Included in each monthly update is art that I’ve completed in the past month, links to videos that I’ve created (timelapses or instructional videos) this month, art that I’ve put up for sale and that which will be going up for sale shortly, a description of the next monthly raffle and how to enter (it’s at the bottom if you’re antsy!), and any other artsy news.

If you like to see my work as it comes out or as I’m working on it, I post almost-daily on Facebook, Minds, Instagram, and Gab, and my videos will also be posted on my Youtube channel.  My original work is currently for sale on Etsy.

Thanks as always for subscribing and feel free to send me a message via my Etsy site or email if you have any questions about painting pricing or commissions; I will do my best to answer.

March Plans:

This month’s theme is “Birds.”  There are a LOT of bird species of course, and I’ll be mostly sticking to my favorites, but I didn’t want to narrow down my topic too much, so “Birds” it is!  I though I’ve spent a lot of time on “backgrounds” like landscapes and spacescapes and would like to spend a little more time on the nuances of other subjects.  I’m also not as “comfortable” with painting birds as some other creatures, so it’ll be interesting to see what I will learn and how/ if I can improve a bit this month.

Last Month:

One of my favorites – Outer Space paintings!  Some are a little fantastical/ out of my imagination, but most are based on real celestial objects.  To celebrate some events in February, I even found some fun celestial objects to paint: the “Heart Nebula” for Valentine’s day, the “Liberty Nebula” for President’s day, a detailed high-contrast moon on a round canvas for the night of the full moon 🙂  I’m really pleased with these, but I think my favorite might be an early one: the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula, because it’s one of the ones I’ve painted before (previous one was in red, two years ago) and I’m happy with the way I think I’ve improved, particularly how I managed to capture some of the smokey tendrils a little better.  They were all a lot of fun to paint though; I really love space art.

I was also able to complete a few commissioned pieces during this time.   One customer wanted a fairy similar to one that I had made before (particularly in the wings), but in turquoise-y-blues, so I came up with two to see what would look best.  They decided to buy the blue-er one (on the right in the first picture) and commission a version of the other in pink/purples (center)!  The remaining turquoise fairy is now in my store 🙂  The other commissioned piece was based on a previous dragon painting that was in greens/yellows with brownish limbs, but the customer suggested pinks/purples and silvery bones, and the silver bone dragon is what I ended up with!

I also finished 50 outer-space blocks for Art-o-mat, bringing me up to 1450 space blocks!!!

Artwork for Sale:

I’ve been keeping enough ahead of the game so far that each of my paintings will be available the Thursday after I’ve posted it, unless you send a message to my Etsy store (or email) letting me know you’d either like to reserve something or purchase it right away.  Also, if you reeeeeally liked something that someone else purchased or reserved – let me know and I will probably be willing to make you one like it 🙂

Upcoming Raffle:

Every first Friday of every month, I will have a raffle, which you can enter to win something for free!  This month’s raffle will be on Friday, March 6th for magnets made from some of my paintings from last year 🙂   All you need to do to enter is to leave a comment on which are your top two favorites – or send me a message on my website or directly to my email address (scenesbycolleen@gmail.com).  I will check everything before deciding the winner on Saturday.  Good luck and thanks for watching! 🙂
(Oh – these magnets will also be added to my Etsy store!)
